Say NO to data leaks, the era of Encrypted Communication is Coming!
A few days ago, it was revealed that the personal information of more than 500 million Facebook users was leaked. The affected users come from a total of 106 different countries and included personal data of many celebrities. Amongst the data leaked was the user’s account name, location, birthday, email address and much more. This incident has once again pushed the topic of privacy protection to the forefront. In fact, this is not the first time that Facebook has been exposed to user data leaks. It’s also not the only company facing these leaks. Almost all social software products we know face the same problem. Think of Twitter, WeChat, LinkedIn.
Nowadays, personal online social networking is highly developed, with demand continuing to grow. The forms and carriers of social networking are becoming increasingly diversified. This aspect has indeed brought about the prosperity of online social networking and has created a number of social products and technology companies. But on the other hand, when we are fascinated by various styles of social products and enjoy the convenience of online social interaction, our personal privacy information and data have become increasingly fragile and dangerous.
Have you ever had the experience of downloading an app or registering on a website, or even just scanning a QR code, and then receiving all kinds of advertising or phonecalls related to it? The problem is not just the leaking of this personal data, but also the use thereof by companies and individuals. Advertisements you didn’t ask for, phone calls with no one on the other end and in worse cases, harassment and fraud. In many cases, it doesn’t stop with just personal data, but it includes our chat history and shared media. It makes you think whether this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Because of these problems, more and more goverments, companies and individuals have begun to pay more attention to privacy protection, data encryption and above all, encrypted communication. The rise and increasing acceptance of blockchain technology is the best example. Companies and teams are putting in more effort into the fields of encrypted chat and encrypted socials, some having been wel promoted and developped. Examples of this are Telegram and Signal in recent years with influential people such as Elon Musk and Edward Snowden having expressed great interest in and support for these encrypted communication applications.
However, from the perspective of encryption, Telegram and Signal still have different levels of security flaws and hidden dangers, and cannot achieve pure privacy protection and security. For example, Telegram is not completely decentralized, and user information is still stored on centralized servers. By default, everything is stored on a server, and only when encrypted chat is selected by the user can partial end-to-end encryption be achieved. Although signal is end-to-end encrypted, the internal process of communication requires a central server to undertake a lot of work. In addition, both platforms requires users and their friends to register through mobile phone numbers, which in many regions is tied to real names on the carrier’s servers. Added to this is personal information, either on the carrier’s servers or within Telegram or Signal’s servers, adding to the complete profile of a person that can be leaked and misused.
Recently, an encrypted instant communication software called Coming has attracted the attention of many people in the industry. Through communication with Coming’s technical support team, we have learned more about the encrypted communication software that they are working on. Coming is based on Signal’s end-to-end encryption protocol, but is further upgraded and optimized. With this protocol as the backbone, blockchain distributed key technology, DID (Decentralized Identity) account system, encrypted payment, Dapp applications (small programs), have been implemented. This will be another major attempt and upgrade in the encrypted communication and payment fields.
Finally, while enjoying the various conveniences brought to us by the modern digital world, we should not ignore privacy and data security, and instead should pay more attention to it. We expect that more and more teams like Signal, Telegram and Coming will put increased efforts into researching and developping solutions to protect our privacy. We also look forward to the Coming communication software to bring us a safer and more convenient experience.
